6th June 2018

I am a 13 year old (12 years old at the at the time of my surgery) from Derry. I began to have frequent migraines, which became more and more frequent as time went on. I was referred to hospital around August 2017 by my GP who believed my symptoms were unusual. After some tests and questions, it was decided that I should have a precautionary MRI. Later on that day, I received the results. The results showed that I had a growth in the back of my head. Days/weeks after that, I was notified by phone that the chances of my having surgery were very high. I became very scared and worried about the weeks to come. We attended a consultation appointment in RBHSC. Mr. Shanmuganathan called my parents and I into his office and he told me the important information that I wanted and needed to know in terms that I could understand. He easily addressed all my concerns and calmed my worries with his kind and fun personality. We were required to go to the hospital one day before my surgery for tests and preparations etc. Later that night, Mano came to my ward, after a long, hard work day to make sure I was okay. He probably had lots of better things to do, but instead, he checked up on me, one of his many patients which I think was a very nice and kind thing to do. When I woke up the next morning (18/09/2017), Mano came to my room again and spoke to me about the surgery. Then, he wheeled me off to the operating theatre. I regained consciousness after the surgery and woke up to 2 nurses trying to fix me up for transfer into the ICU unit. Mano returned, not too long after the surgery, to check on me again. I spend 6 nights in hospital in total. At the end of each night Mano would come to my room to check up on me and tell me what was going on. It turned out to be a very successful surgery. I couldn’t have asked for a better doctor. What was a very scary experience, Mano also made it interesting by showing be before and after MRI scans of my head and he continues to do so at all of my check-ups. Though this is a review website for constructive criticism, I have no criticisms at all to give about this man. For anybody in a similar situation to mine, you are in the finest hands possible. From Patrick

Mano operated on my 13 year old son as he had a brain tumour, to say that me and my wife were absolutely terrified about what the outcome of the operation might be was a under statement but with Mano's professional and kind personality we made it through the complete procedure with a good news ending. I'll never forget the Sunday evening before the operation - me, my wife and son were sitting in the ward totally terrified of what was going to happen the next day (the back of my sons head was just after being shaved as preparation for the operation the next day) then mano comes round the corner and starts talking to us about what was going to happen and did we have any questions (we had plenty) though they were all answered and when he was done we were all alot calmer, the reason I remember this visit is because it was 11 o'clock on a Sunday night and mano was at home but he still came in to see my son Patrick. I'll never forget that. I honestly believe that Mano made a painful time in my family's life alot less painful that what it should have been and for that I'm eternally grateful.

Six weeks ago l had major lumbar surgery for second time(2005). Mr mano preformed a double decompression /discectomy . The pain has completely gone from my legs and I am able to resume normal life after 2 years of considerable pain. I found Mr Mano an excellent doctor and would highly recommend him.

Mr Mano Shanmuganathan is a gentleman in the true sense of the word. I had back pain which was impacting on both my legs but especially on my left leg. I was at the point where the pain was constant - I was walking with a limp and couldn’t sleep properly. I was attending my GP - who was terrific - for about a year but things just continued to worsen. Then I had an appointment with Mr Shanmuganathan who had my MRI results in front of him. I had a benign tumour in my spine. He explained everything so plainly and with a lot of hope for a good outcome after surgery. I was operated on at the RVH in December 2016. And my first sign that things were good after getting back to the ward was my big swollen ankle was back to normal! I had the best care from all at the RVH and I know I had the best neuro surgeon anyone could have. He is so compassionate and explains things in an understandable way. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Regards Patricia

What an amazing neurosurgeon! I was suffering with a nerve root compression as a result of having two prolapsed discs in my lower spine. I was living in constant pain with no quality of life. I was referred to Mano who performed a ‘discectomy’ at RVH. I was told that it could take several months to regain feeling in my left foot and for my sciatic pain to settle (hoping for 70-80% pain reduction) however when I woke from surgery I immediately had sensation in my foot and ALL sciatic pain had completely gone! Mano is friendly, caring and sympathetic, I felt at ease and confident in his care. Staff spoke with such high regard for him understandably. His knowledge, professionalism and ability puts him ahead in his field. My outcome has been amazing and I am now pain free, able to walk, sleep and get back to normal everyday life. I will be eternally grateful to Mano for his exceptional care from both himself and the exceptional staff and would have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone. Thank you David Press
